  • How to choose your wall light: the complete guide 2026

    Mon Luminaire

Wall sconces are one of the most impactful decorative elements in a room. However, many people don't know where to start when choosing one. Style, size, bulb base, material, placement — here's everything you need to know to make the right choice.

    1. Start with your interior style

Before looking at models, identify the dominant style of your interior. An industrial black iron sconce will be perfect in a loft apartment with exposed concrete, but totally out of place in a pastel-toned bedroom. Key styles to know:

    • Nordic / Scandinavian: clean lines, natural wood, white or black, simple geometric shapes
    • Industrial / Loft: wrought iron, exposed bulb holder, rust or matte black finish, metal cage
    • Bohemian / Natural: rattan, jute, hemp, bamboo, organic shapes
    • Vintage / Retro: amber glass, golden brass, iron candlestick, filament bulbs
    • Contemporary / Design: geometric LED shapes, brushed aluminum, crystal, architectural lines

    2. Choose the right location

The location determines everything: the size, light output, and type of sconce to choose.

    • Headboard: opt for an adjustable sconce with an articulated arm or USB port, at eye level
    • Living room: choose a decorative sconce that creates soft ambient light, on a sofa wall or symmetrically
    • Hallway: select a compact model with a dual up/down beam to illuminate the wall without encroaching on space
    • Bathroom: it's essential that the sconce is certified IP44 minimum for wet areas
    • Outdoor: demand IP65 certification to withstand rain and frost

    3. The bulb base: E27, G9, E14 or integrated LED?

This is often the question that stumps buyers. Here's a simple guide:

    • E27: the most common, large screw base — compatible with almost all LED bulbs on the market
    • E14: small screw base — for more compact sconces and decorative candle bulbs
    • G9: pin base — very compact, ideal for small designer and bathroom sconces
    • Integrated LED: no bulb to change, often more economical in the long run, but not replaceable in case of failure

    4. What size to choose?

The general rule: the sconce should not exceed 1/3 of the width of the wall on which it is mounted. For a headboard, place the sconce 120-140 cm from the floor. For a living room, at eye level (approximately 150-170 cm). For a hallway, at 180-200 cm to avoid dazzling.

    5. Warm, cool, or tricolor light?

    • Warm light (2700-3000K): ideal for living rooms and bedrooms — cozy and relaxing ambiance
    • Neutral light (4000K): perfect for offices, hallways, and bathrooms
    • Cool light (5500-6500K): reserved for workspaces or intense reading
    • Tricolor: the best of all three worlds — you choose according to the time and ambiance

    6. Installation: with or without an electrician?

Most wall sconces connect directly to existing electrical wiring. For rooms without a wall outlet, opt for rechargeable USB sconces or solar models that install without any wiring.
